Soup Kitchen News
A Newsletter of MPC’s Food Sharing Ministry
February 2008
On February 4, food bags provided by the German Embassy were handed out at the Mosfilmovskaya soup kitchen. Food bags provided by MPC were also passed out at Kuznetsky Most. The food bags contained food staples such as sugar, tea, rice and cooking oil. Food bags will be passed out next month in association with International Women’s Day. We will also be celebrating that Holiday with cake for our customers. Birthdays are such a special occasion in Russia that we have started a Birthday celebration day at Mosfilmovskaya. Once a month, every customer with a birthday that month will be recognized and presented with a card and a small present, i.e. chocolate. January and February birthdays were celebrated this past Monday. A special thanks to the 6th grade Girl Scouts of AAS Troop 4 who provided baked treats. Have you noticed the nice flower decorations on the tables? Dana has been faithfully bringing new arrangements every season. The soup kitchen committee’s next meeting will be at 12:45 on Monday, March 3 at Evelyn’s house in the German Embassy compound. The meeting is open to anyone wishing to brainstorm with future events and projects. Please let Mike know if you’re attending. Profiles of the Month: This month’s profiles are from the Mosfilmovskaya soup kitchen which serves pensioners and persons with disabilities.
Client profile: We’ve all seen Nina coming at the soup kitchen, but did you know this about her?
Nina grew up at an orphanage in Moscow. Her parents died very early in her life so she doesn’t know exactly where or when she was born. She also had two sisters and a brother, all whom died in the Second World War. She has spent all her life in Moscow and worked in a factory making clothing.
Client profile: We’ve all seen Victor coming at the soup kitchen, but did you know this about him?
Everyone at Mosfilmovskaya knows Victor. He is the most animated and outgoing customer; frequently giving advice or commentary on everything and everyone. He was born in Yaxroma, on the outskirts of Moscow. He has one sister and a daughter which he does not have contact with. He studied commerce in college, but worked as a singer and actor in the theatre. He has even performed in the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall. He lives in South Moscow and been coming to the soup kitchen for 15 years, starting at another location before moving to Mosfilmovskaya. He enjoys poetry and singing, but doesn’t like TV saying, “it’s for lazy people….”
The soup kitchen is part of Moscow Protestant Chaplaincy’s food service ministry. Information about MPC and its food service ministry can be found at http://www.moscowprotestantchaplaincy.org/fsm.htm

I am convinced that love is the most durable power in the world. It is not an expression of impractical idealism but of practical realism. Far from being the pious injunction of an Utopian dreamer, love is an absolute necessity for the survival of our civilization.    To return hate for hate does nothing but intensify the existence of evil in the universe.Someone must have sense enough and religion enough to cut off the chain of hate and evil, and this only be done through love....Martin Luther king Jr. 1957
