Soup Kitchen News
A Newsletter of MPC’s Food Sharing Ministry
November 2007
Kuznetsky Most soup kitchen has been open for a month and a half, and we have made several changes to its operation to better serve our clients. Because the soup kitchen serves children, many who are at school during the day, food is typically distributed for take-out rather than eat-in. The serving time has also been changed to 11:00 to 12:30. We have also recently added new families to feed an additional 17 people bringing our total to 67.
Welcome to all the new soup kitchen volunteers who have joined the ranks in helping those less fortunate in Moscow. Please send an e-mail note if you wish to become a regular volunteer, join our committee or assist in any other way to muramj@aol.com Thanks to those who generously gave monetary donations for additional food to our clients last month. The donations provide additional food for the meal and include such things as dairy products, salads, buns, meat and chocolates.
Grant recently returned back to the US after spending the summer in Moscow. He was a faithful volunteer at Kuznetsky Most and terrific singer in the choir. Look for him when he returns next year.
Girl Scouts from AAS 6th grade Troop 4 helped serve at the Mosfilmovskaya soup kitchen on October 4. The girls served treats that they prepared and provided a cheerful smile while working on one of their badges. They will also be collecting candy from Halloween to distribute.
Over 4000 lbs of long life fruit yogurt donated by Campina was picked up on Oct. 22 in Stupino by a caravan of minivans from MPC led by Pastor Bob. The yogurt will be distributed over the coming weeks at the Mosfilmovskaya and Kuznetsky Most soup kitchens, an orphanage supported by AAS and IWC, MPC’s food bags to African, UN refugees and Metis children and at the retired librarian soup kitchen supported by IWC. We recently completed distributing 1000 lbs. of yogurt also donated by Campina on Oct. 5. Anyone wishing to help in future trips, please contact Pastor Bob. Christy is currently working on a photo project to let volunteers know our customer’s names. She is adding names to our client’s photos and should be ready very soon. Thanks to the Ambassador of Germany who donated a cake to the Mosfilmovskaya soup kitchen on October 9.
Pass the word: You may have read about MPC’s soup kitchen in local newsletters. Thanks to Michelle and Diana who have helped us spread the word of the soup kitchen in recent IWC and US Embassy news. The soup kitchen committee’s next meeting is 1230 on Monday, Nov. 26 at Evelyn’s house in the German Embassy compound. The meeting is open to anyone wishing to brainstorm with future events and projects. We will be planning the Christmas party for Kuznetsky Most and Christmas gift bags at Mosfilmovskaya. Please contact Mike for details.
Profiles of the Month: We welcome and serve our customers, but do you know them? Next time you see them, please say hello…
Client profile: We’ve all seen Valentina coming at the soup kitchen, but did you know this about her?
Valentina was born and lived all her life in Moscow. She worked as a draftsperson, making engineering drawings after completing studies at the Institute of Drafting. Valentina has no children and has been coming to the Mosfilmovskaya soup kitchen for at least 10 years. She lives near the Molodyozhnaya metro and never fails to give everyone helping at the soup kitchen a big “spaseeba” – thank you in Russian.
Client profile: We’ve all seen Maria coming at the soup kitchen, but did you know this about her?

Maria is originally from Baranovich, Belarus. She moved to Moscow in 1952 and worked in a factory making construction materials. Her husband died many years ago and she has no children. Maria has been coming to the soup kitchen since 2001 and lives nearby on Mosfilmovskaya Street. Those who serve her know she usually orders only a single helping of soup on Monday and Wednesday which allows us to give the second order to someone else.

It’s not too early to think about Christmas…… Christmas Bazaar: Are you starting your Christmas shopping list? A great place to shop, have a great time with your family, and help the soup kitchen is at the German Embassy Christmas Bazaar. The bazaar will be held on Nov. 24 from 10h30 – 15h00 at the German Embassy on Mosfilmovskaya Ulitsa near the soup kitchen. The bazaar helps fund soup kitchen projects throughout the year such as food bags and gifts. The soup kitchen will have an information table so please come by. Remember, the good stuff sells out fast.Christmas Angels needed to provide presents to children at Kuznetsky Most. Pick out a Christmas stocking at MPC on Sunday with a child’s name, gender and age. Place the wrapped Christmas gift for your child in the collection box at MPC after service on Dec. 9 or 16. Gifts will be presented to your child at the Kuznetsky Most Christmas party on Dec. 17. Anyone wishing to provide gifts, decorations or refreshments for the party please contact Mike. Does your company have any products it could donate? If you or someone you know works for a food or consumer products company, donations make valuable gift for our clients. Contact Pastor Bob Bronkema at the MPC website e-mail address below if you know of any company that is willing to make donations. Companies and embassies also provide valuable financial support for the food sharing ministries.
For information on financial giving contact Gottfried Spieth at pastor@co.ru

I am convinced that love is the most durable power in the world. It is not an expression of impractical idealism but of practical realism. Far from being the pious injunction of an Utopian dreamer, love is an absolute necessity for the survival of our civilization.    To return hate for hate does nothing but intensify the existence of evil in the universe.Someone must have sense enough and religion enough to cut off the chain of hate and evil, and this only be done through love....Martin Luther king Jr. 1957
